How to compress an image to 10 KB
- Tap Choose image above (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more) and pick your photo.
- On the Exact KB tab the target is already 10 KB and the rule is At or under target (most portals). Change either if your form says otherwise.
- Tap Compress to target. The gauge shows each pass. A large phone photo usually takes a few seconds on a computer, longer on an older phone.
- Compare the result with the original. The result line shows its pixel size and file size.
- Tap Download result, and upload that file to your form.
Crop first: our signature test
At 10 KB, what's in the picture decides everything. We compressed a camera photo of a signature on paper (desk and pen in shot), then the same photo cropped to one signature:
| Same photo | At 10 KB | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Whole scene | 420×280 px | The signature is a small smudge in a desk photo |
| Cropped to the signature | 462×376 px | The signature fills the frame, strokes crisp |
Same 10 KB, a completely different result. Cropping is the single most important step for a 10 KB upload.
Photos at 10 KB
| Photo | 10 KB | 20 KB |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait, plain wall (26 MP) | 251×376 px | 386×579 px |
| Indoor selfie (24 MP) | 202×303 px | 321×481 px |
| Busy street market (24 MP) | 144×216 px | 240×360 px |
| Group photo outdoors (24 MP) | 216×144 px | 348×232 px |
| Clear sky, little detail (12 MP) | 846×1127 px | 1208×1610 px |
Test photos: free-to-use Unsplash photos (12–26 megapixels; Unsplash re-encodes its downloads); PixKB Exact KB, "At or under target", desktop Chromium on our test server, October 2026. Pixel sizes are what the tool chose to fit, and can differ slightly between browsers; bytes are exact. Sizes in decimal KB (1 KB = 1,000 bytes).
A portrait fits at about 251×376 pixels: still recognisable, but small. If your form allows more than 10 KB for the photo and 10 KB is only for the signature, use the larger limit for the photo. Fine detail (hair, text in the background) softens at this size.
10 KB as a minimum
Many forms use 10 KB as the lowest size they accept, not the highest: the SSC signature (10–20 KB), the India e-Visa photo (10–300 KB) and the India passport photo (10–250 KB). For those, aim for the upper limit (for example 20 KB for the SSC signature), or if a file comes out under 10 KB, use increase image size in KB.
If the form also sets a pixel size
To reach 10 KB the tool may reduce the pixel size. If your form requires exact dimensions (for example a signature size), use its preset, or resize first and tap Keep editing this result before compressing: how to keep an exact pixel size.
Getting a clean 10 KB signature
- Sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white paper, a little larger than usual.
- Photograph it in daylight, straight on, with no shadow from your phone.
- Crop right to the edges of the signature, then compress.
- If the form gives signature dimensions, use the signature resizer or the form's preset.
1,000 or 1,024 bytes?
Forms count a kilobyte either way, and the difference can decide a tight limit: a 10,100-byte file is 10.1 KB to one system and 9.9 KB to another, so it passes one 10 KB limit and fails the next. PixKB aims for the stricter count: a maximum of 10 KB gives at most 10,000 bytes, which passes either way.
Frequently asked questions
Can any photo be compressed to 10 KB?
Yes, at small pixel sizes: about 251×376 for our portrait and 144×216 for a busy street scene. The tool chooses the largest size that stays clean.
Why is my 10 KB signature blurry?
Usually because the picture includes too much paper, desk or shadow. Crop to the signature first: in our test the cropped signature kept crisp strokes at 10 KB.
My form says the signature must be 10–20 KB. What do I use?
Compress to 20 KB with "At or under". The result lands just under 20 KB and well above 10 KB.
Is 10 KB a maximum or a minimum?
Read the form carefully: for the SSC signature, India e-Visa and India passport photo, 10 KB is the minimum.
Why did the tool make my image smaller in pixels?
Because 10 KB is about a five-hundredth of a phone photo. Reducing pixels keeps the image clean; quality alone would make it blocky.
Is compressing to 10 KB free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark, no daily limit, and the tool runs on your own device.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser and saved straight back to your device. You can turn on airplane mode after the page loads and it still works.
Does 10 KB mean 10,000 or 10,240 bytes?
It depends on the form. PixKB keeps the file at or under 10,000 bytes, which passes either way.
Which file types can I start from?
JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC (iPhone), GIF, BMP, SVG and AVIF. The result is a JPEG, which is what forms with KB limits ask for.
Can I compress several photos at once?
Yes. Drop several images in; each is compressed to the same target and they download together as a ZIP.
